Day to Day

Now that we have been here for a little while, our days have become slightly more interesting.

We had been told that we would be living within walking distance of markets, malls, and supermarkets. Upon first look, our neighborhood had nothing that looked satisfactory for shopping. However, after getting out and wandering around, almost all of the many hole-in-the-wall shops around us actually carry most of the items that we need. In fact, there are at least 3 pharmacies within 1/2 mile, and even a specialty baby store! They may not look like much from the outside, but the people are very helpful and the prices are exceptional.

For example, the other day at the produce market I bought half a dozen potatoes, 2 bulbs of garlic and some fresh ginger root all for 15 rupees--less than 30 cents. I don't think I could buy even just the garlic in the States for that amount! There is also a wonderful little flower shop down the street. Last week I bought a beautiful arrangement with a half a dozen roses for less than 2 dollars!

Not only is it convenient for shopping, but I've found it's really good to get the boys out of the apartment and into the neighborhood a bit. They are a hit with all of the locals of course, and it took me a time or two, but now we've gotten it down to a science exactly how long we can stop before the cheek pinching starts. It's gotten to the point where Micah gets pretty upset and starts grunting and yelling NO NO NO NO! when he see's a pair of hands coming at him, so I try to minimize touching as much as possible. Noah handles it a little better, but usually pulls the the sunguard on the stroller down over his eyes. All in all, we have really come to enjoy our little neighborhood.
